Stump Grinding in Baltimore County

The tree is gone — the stump doesn't have to stay. We grind stumps 6–12 inches below grade, chase the major surface roots, and leave the spot ready for seed, sod, a new planting, or a patio.

Why grind it out

  • Stops suckers and regrowth from the stump
  • Removes a trip hazard and mower-killer
  • Eliminates the nesting spot for termites and carpenter ants near the house
  • Frees the space for lawns, beds, fences, and driveways

How it works

  • We locate utilities before grinding (Miss Utility / 811)
  • Grinder fits through a standard 36-inch gate
  • Grindings can be hauled off or left as mulch — your choice
  • Most single stumps take under an hour

What it costs

Most single stumps run $100–$400 depending on diameter and root flare. Big oak stumps with wide surface roots run more. Multiple stumps on one visit get priced as a package — the per-stump cost drops fast.

Already have stumps from an old removal? No problem — grind-only visits are a regular part of our route all over Baltimore County. Measure the stump across at its widest (including the flare) and call (443) 873-3338 for a quick phone estimate.

Good to know

Access note: the grinder needs about a 36-inch clear path — a standard gate is fine. Hills, fences, and tight side yards are everyday work in Baltimore County's older neighborhoods; if a machine genuinely can't reach your stump, we'll tell you at the estimate and talk through the alternatives honestly rather than discovering it on the day.

How stump grinding is priced

Grinding is priced by diameter — measured across the stump at its widest point, including the root flare where it meets the ground. The structure is roughly $2–$5 per inch, which is why a 12-inch pine stump and a 36-inch oak stump are very different jobs. Most single stumps land between $100 and $450 all-in; a stump 36 inches or wider usually runs $400–$800. Grind-only visits carry a minimum charge — the machine still has to travel, unload, and be cleaned — and multiple stumps on one visit are priced as a package, where the per-stump cost falls fast. Your exact price is confirmed in writing at the free estimate, combined with a removal quote or booked entirely on its own. The cost guide has the full price picture.

Depth options

Standard grinding runs 6 to 12 inches below grade — right for lawn, planting beds, and most replanting nearby. Going deeper (12 to 18 inches or more, with the major roots chased) makes sense when a new tree is going close to the same spot, or when the area is being prepped for a patio, walkway, or driveway work. Tell us what the spot needs to become at the estimate and the depth gets quoted to match — depth is the one thing you can't redo cheaply later.

What happens to the grindings

A ground stump leaves a mound of wood chips and soil roughly the size of the stump itself. It settles over a few weeks as the chips break down. Most homeowners rake the chips into beds as mulch — they work well for that. We can also haul the grindings away and backfill the spot with topsoil; say so at the estimate and it's in the quote. One caution: don't plant a new tree directly in fresh grindings — decomposing chips tie up nitrogen. Plant a few feet offset, or choose the deeper grind plus soil backfill if the new tree has to go in the same place.

Grinding vs. full stump removal (dig-out)

Digging a stump out means an excavator pulling the whole root ball — a bigger hole, more disruption, and typically several times the cost of grinding. It's the right call when a foundation, footing, or utility trench has to go exactly where the stump is, and overkill almost everywhere else. For a normal yard, grinding wins: the stump is gone below grade, the roots left behind simply decay in place, and the lawn goes back the same week.

Stump questions we hear most

How long does stump grinding take?

Most single stumps take under an hour. Very large oak stumps with wide surface roots take longer, and multi-stump packages are priced and scheduled as one visit.

Can I plant where the stump was?

Grass, yes — right away, once the chips are raked level and seeded. A new tree does best a few feet offset from the old spot, or in the same spot with a deeper grind and soil backfill instead of fresh chips.

What about buried utilities?

We arrange the free Miss Utility (811) locate before grinding — it's required, and it protects everyone. Tell us about anything 811 doesn't mark: sprinkler systems, septic lines, invisible-fence wire, and landscape lighting.
