Where to Buy Trees in Maryland

Short answer: for a big shade tree planted right, start local — Patuxent Nursery in Bowie and Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville both grow for Maryland soil and will plant it for you. For smaller trees shipped to your door, the online sellers below are the ones we'd send a neighbor to. We don't sell trees, and nobody on this page pays us — we're the folks you call when a tree has to come down, and we'd rather point you straight when one goes in.

What to Plant in Maryland

Shade

Willow oak and northern red oak are the Maryland workhorses — native, long-lived, and built for our summers. A bare-root oak online runs about $15; a 15-gallon tree at a local nursery usually runs $150–$300; a 2–2.5″ caliper tree $300–$600, with planting extra.

Fall color

Red maple is the one Maryland asks for by name. October Glory and Autumn Blaze are the two popular varieties — expect $70–$100 for a 3–4 ft potted tree shipped, more for a big local one.

Privacy

Thuja Green Giant grows 3–5 ft a year into a wall that needs no pruning. Small starters run about $20 online; a 5–6 ft tree runs about $160. Space them 5–6 ft apart for a screen.

Spring show

Eastern redbud and flowering dogwood are Maryland's spring — every nursery below carries them in season, usually $40–$150 depending on size.

Before you plant: look up

A 60-foot oak planted under the power lines is a removal bill in 20 years. Match the tree's mature size to the spot, plant in fall or early spring, dig the hole wide instead of deep in Maryland clay, and water weekly through the first year. Plant the right size and you'll never have to meet us professionally.
